Why Do Dogs Dislike Baths?

December 1, 2024

Does your canine partner flee when he hears the terrible B-word? If so, he’s not alone. The great majority of dogs do not enjoy bathing. This is probably not a big surprise. But it might be confounding, especially because many dogs like swimming! In this article from Hassayampa Veterinary Services, serving Wickenburg, AZ and the surrounding communities, a local vet discusses Fido’s distaste of his beauty care.

Is It Normal For Dogs To Dislike Baths?

We can’t exactly poll our canine patients on this one, but if we could, it’s probably reasonable to say that the great majority of them would be less than enthusiastic about bath time. However, some dogs are just minimally irritated and will often tolerate being cleaned. Others are much more dramatic.

How Often Should I Bathe My Dog?

How often you need to bathe your canine companion can vary greatly. A dog with short, sleek fur will need fewer washes than one with fluffy fur that is prone to mats or tangles.

If your pet has short, sleek fur, you may only need to wash him every one to three months. There is considerable variance here, of course. If your canine buddy enjoys rolling about in dirt puddles, he’ll require more regular washes. Dogs with medium or long fur should be washed more often. Hairless dogs also require frequent bathing. Dogs with thick, double coats may typically go longer. They tend to shed more, thus most of the oil and debris are simply gone.

Of course, you should seek particular guidance from your Wickenburg, AZ veterinarian or breeder.=

Why Do Dogs Dislike Baths?

Because each dog is unique, there will be no single universal solution to this question. We all like the salon-fresh sensation, and dogs are no exception. In fact, most dogs appear to like feeling salon-fresh and clean. They just don’t like the method. Having stated that, here are some frequent possibilities:

Negative Associations

One thing you should know about dogs is that they do not think in the same manner that humans do. They surely do not consider in terms of good and wrong, and they do not comprehend punishment. They simply create linkages in their memory between certain stimuli or locations and the feelings or experiences linked with them.

It doesn’t take much to create negative connections with bathtime.

  • Fear of Being Trapped
  • New Experiences
  • Bad vibes  Dogs are incredibly smart and can sense our moods and signals. Chances are that if your pet dislikes showers, or if your previous dog disliked baths, you dislike the practice as well. Fido may be reacting to subtle signs that you aren’t having fun, which will do nothing to enhance his view.
  • Prior Experiences  Unfortunately, some of our canine patients have gone through difficult circumstances in the past. Some, particularly those that were postponed, were rescued from abusive owners and/or conditions. It is far too typical for dogs to have been traumatized by previous encounters. If your pet has been screamed at, rough-handled, or even hit, he may be experiencing doggie PTSD as a result of the experience. Smaller things, like soap in the eyes or a scary slip, can also do it.

What Should I Do if My Dog Hates Baths?

You won’t be able to resolve this issue by talking with your pet. Instead, you must attempt to give him a more positive view of the situation.

Here are a few tips.

  • Be cheerful. Try not to wash your pup if you are upset, unhappy, or furious.
  • Chat with the pup! Just talking to Fido in a soothing tone can help.
  • Take it outdoors. In the summer, your dog may choose to take a bath in a kiddie pool or with a hose.
  • Keep it comfy.  Small changes, such as keeping the water at a pleasant temperature, can go a long way.
  • Prepare everything before bringing your dog into the bathtub.
  • Do not get soap into your dog’s eyes! To rinse, use a teapot or pitcher.
  • Timing may also be a factor here. Make Fido feel good about the restroom. Call him into the bathroom, then place him in the bathtub. Give him a reward after he gets in. This should be a high-value prize, such as a piece of steak. Then just let him go.
  • Avoid soaps and shampoos that are very scented. They can be rather overwhelming for Fido’s delicate nose!
  • Keep a consistent schedule: If you keep your pet’s coat in good condition, bathing may not take long at all.
  • Reward your dog! Make it a habit to reward Fido with a new toy or special treat, like a chew, following bath time.
