Pawesome Benefits of Adopting a Senior Pet

October 15, 2024

Are you getting a new pet soon? When looking for a new pet, many people choose young animals. We understand why: puppies and kittens are both super cute and entertaining. There is also undoubtedly something to be said for raising your own pet. However, senior pets have much to offer! In this article from Hassayampa Veterinary Services,  serving Wickenburg and the surrounding communities, a Wickenburg, AZ vet discusses the benefits of adopting an older pet.

They’re Calmer

Puppies and kittens are typically very energetic, whereas older pets are much more relaxed. While baby animals are certainly adorable to watch, they can get into everything during this lovely period, and need a lot of toys and attention.

Older animals are usually finished with their zoomies and have often outgrown destructive habits like digging and biting. They really just want to sleep, eat, and cuddle.

You’d Be Saving a Life

An aging animal may have difficulty finding a new home. Many people ignore them in favor of younger animals. While some shelters have implemented a no-kill policy, it is not a typical practice.

There is no precise figure for how many pets are euthanized in shelters each year, but estimates range from 378,000 to one million. Unfortunately, mature animals have a low likelihood of ever leaving a shelter because many only have a limited time to get adopted. Saving a pet’s life can be extremely rewarding and fulfilling.

What You See Is What You Get

It’s difficult to predict how a kitten or puppy will look when it grows older. You will also be unable to anticipate Fido’s growth, especially if you choose a mutt. This can be a major worry, especially for tenants, as many landlords have size restrictions. Furthermore, you will have limited knowledge of their adult personality. With an elderly animal, there is no need for guesswork, and no surprises.

They’re Already Trained

Another benefit of adopting older animals? Many of them have previously received training. There are numerous benefits to preventing housebreaking! Cats usually train humans, not the other way around—but they must understand the dos and don’ts of being a good kitty. (Fluffy may not care about petiquette, but that’s another topic.)

They Provide Unconditional Love

Pets are incredibly intuitive. They realize when someone has helped them and are sincerely thankful. There is nothing quite like that unwavering affection Fluffy and Fido offer. You may very well just melt when your new buddy stares up at you with those large, soulful eyes!

Shorter Commitments

Adopting a puppy or kitten typically entails committing to at least ten years of pet ownership. Older animals simply have less time. This could be beneficial to some. If you don’t know where you’ll be in 10 years, or if you’re maybe planning to go to college for eight years before moving across the nation, an older animal may be the greatest choice for your schedule.

They Are Not As Destructive

Fluffy and Fido will gradually but steadily run out of gas, just like people do. By the time they reach their senior years, Fluffy will be more interested in catching Z’s than mice, while Fido will most likely chase more squirrels in his dreams than in reality. Many unwanted behaviors, such as digging and gnawing, will also have been outgrown by then as well.

You May Save Money

Shelters frequently offer elderly animal adoptions at discounted rates in order to boost their prospects of adoption. You may also save money on veterinarian visits, because Fido and Fluffy are most likely already fixed. Of course, they may need more veterinary care as they age. They’re Really Adorable!

While kittens and puppies are cute, older pets may also be quite charming. Plus, because of their tranquil, friendly, and loving nature, older animals are usually very enjoyable to be around! What’s not to love about a sweet older pet that just wants naps and cuddles?

You’ll Promote Good Animal Welfare

When you adopt an elderly animal, you will also indirectly assist other homeless pets. For starters, you will free up space at the shelter, allowing another cherished dog or cat to find a new home. The adoption fees for Fluffy and Fido will also assist the shelter provide food, shelter, and care to its other animals.
