Signs Your Horse May Need a Dental Exam
While some horses show no obvious signs of discomfort, here are some red flags that may indicate a dental issue:
- Dropping feed or difficulty chewing
- Unexplained weight loss
- Excessive salivation
- Head tossing, resistance to the bit, or bridle issues
- Foul breath
- Nasal discharge (especially from one nostril)
- Facial swelling or sinus infections
If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to schedule an equine dental exam with our Wickenburg veterinary team.
Equine Dentistry Services We Provide
At Hassayampa Veterinary Services, we recommend dental exams at least once per year, or more frequently for horses with known dental issues or those over the age of 15.
Our equine dentistry services include:
-
Oral Exam with Speculum
We perform a full visual and manual inspection of your horse’s teeth, tongue, cheeks, and gums to check for abnormalities, overgrowth, ulcers, or infections.
-
Routine Dental Float
Using power or hand tools, we smooth sharp enamel points, address hooks or ramps, and balance the bite to ensure even contact and pain-free chewing.
-
Tooth Extractions (if needed)
If your horse has a fractured or infected tooth, we can perform extractions and provide follow-up care.
-
Digital Records & Monitoring
We track your horse’s dental changes over time and create a care schedule that meets their individual needs.
